The only friend of old Santiago, left alone after his wife's death, is the young Manolito. He is fond of the old man, who once took him with him to fish; now Manolito's father no longer allows his son to participate in fishing, but the boy continues to frequent Santiago, who not only teaches him the secrets of fishing, but gives him useful lessons for life. Manolito sometimes procures some food for the old man, who although he insists on going out to sea, returns almost always empty-handed. But the sea is his life; and he is convinced that if fortune returns to favor him in fishing, the good times will return for him.
